The Historical Center of Agropoli
Take advantage of your stay in the facilities of Bellezza in Cilento and come visit the medieval village of Agropoli
Come to spend your vacation in the wonderful villas, apartments and cottages of Bellezza in Cilento and discover the village of Agropoli, one of the many wonders that surround our facilities. Perched on a cliff with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Salerno, Agropoli is an ancient historic center surrounded by seventeenth-century walls. Through the characteristic ascent of the “scaloni,” one of the few examples of access of this design to the historic center, you can enter through the monumental gate, also from the seventeenth century.
The well-preserved gate is an integral part of the city walls, built of local stone and composed of two arms, a southern and a northern one that pivot on the castle and end on the overhang of the “Rupe,” a natural defense from invaders.
The ancient village can be reached on foot and for centuries was the only way into the village. The steps, wide and low, have survived the demands of vehicular traffic, which elsewhere resulted in their leveling. The wall protecting the steps is adorned with battlements with spherical ends that recall the gateway battlements and an iron cross indicating the year 1909, a reminder of the sacred missions.
The castle is triangular in plan and with three circular towers, it stands on the promontory wedging itself like a vertex within the area of the ancient village, while the base juts out of the built-up area as an advanced fortification. Surrounding the castle walls is a wide and deep moat, now distinguishable on the side towards the village.
Book your vacation at one of Beauty in Cilento’s facilities and after visiting the village, discover the interior of the castle, occupied by the parade ground and buildings leaning against it on the northern and eastern sides. The square, now used as a garden and open-air theater, rests on the rock incorporated in its time into the castle walls. The village is full of alleys, 18th-century palaces and churches. Beautiful is the view at the end of the Scalone in front of the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso over the harbor and the whole Gulf of Salerno. Many restaurants and stores make the historic center of Agropoli really pleasant to visit.
