If you are a fan of trekking and walking, Mount Stella is perfect for a unique experience: with its 1131 meters, panoramic views, and Madonna della Stella shrines, it is the centerpiece of northern Cilento.
To make the hike, once you arrive in Omignano, follow the signs and start climbing up the road to the mountain and the small church, which is about 1100 meters above sea level. The paved road is well-maintained by the Air Force, which owns the flight radars that we will see later, and is passable all the way to the top where you continue to the right on a very scenic nature trail that leads to a belvedere that allows a 360-degree view. It feels like being in an airplane and admiring the immensity of space, with silence enveloping the viewer without having dimension.
Very interesting is the path that runs along the ridge of the mountain joining the area at the edge of the chapel with the site of Castelluccio, where the remains of the Longobard fortress are still present. Along the path, bordered by wooded scrubland, there are pleasant views both of the sea to the west and of inland Cilento to the east, where the main mountain peaks of the area (Gelbison, Chianiello and the Rupi, Cervati) and the artificial lake of Piano della Rocca, on the Alento River, are clearly discernible. Halfway along the trail one also comes across the “Preta ru Mulacchio,” a series of huddled monoliths, about 7 meters high, a probable site of ancient prehistoric cults dated around 3000 B.C. since flint knives from that period have been found in the area.
The chapel of St. Mary of the Star appears as a massive building with strongly tapered walls. Its present appearance is probably due to several successive interventions and works until 1693. The appearance is simple and dignified, and the site is striking, despite the proximity of tall radar transmission pylons. That of Mount Stella is one of the 7 major Cilento shrines (the “Seven Sisters”) dedicated to Our Lady.
We suggest making the trek from the shrine to Castelluccio at night with a full moon, equipped with a flashlight. The spectacle is wonderful on all the illuminated villages and you can often walk even without artificial light. The round trip takes about two hours.
The villas, cottages, and apartments of Beauty in Cilento are located a short distance from one of the area’s most picturesque trails. Spend a dream vacation in our vacation homes and choose the one that’s right for you:
