The Bussento Oasis and the river of the same name, represent an extraordinary example of nature in its absolute purity, covering some 607 hectares, established in 1995 at the behest of WWF Italy. In the oasis there is a nature trail and an equipped area for tourists who want to visit the magnificent caves.
The ideal route to fully enjoy these natural wonders begins in Morigerati, with a mule track paved in stone and partly dug into the rock; after a series of hairpin bends downhill, you arrive at the ruins of an old mill from the 1700s, which ground flour through the force of the river’s waters. Continuing on, you reach the entrance to the cave, which is entered by a stone ladder. Passing through the canyon carved by the river, you reach the breathtaking views located along the gorge, consisting largely of clear, cool water that goes into spectacular rapids and waterfalls.
The bottom of the gorge of the Bussento River is also rich in dense vegetation, made up of mosses and ferns as well as the more typical willows and alders, in addition to holm oaks, downy oaks, ash trees and hornbeams; to the southeast, on the other hand, it is possible to admire arboreal spurge, ampelodesma and mastic trees.
In particular, the area of the Bussento River is the richest in Cilento in terms of otters. In the vicinity of the springs, on the other hand, quite considerable populations of spectacled salamander live, while trout, crayfish and crabs can be found in the river. The Bussento River, the fundamental hub of the Morigerati Oasis, stretches for about 7 km offering one of the most important karst phenomena in Italy because it sinks at Caselle in Pittari and resurfaces right in the caves. This itinerary can be combined with the Capelli di Venere Waterfalls, as it is only a few kilometers away.
Come visit the beautiful Bussento Caves in Morigerati, in the WWF oasis, and spend long days relaxing and carefree in the villas, cottages, and apartments of Bellezza in Cilento:
